1 January 2005: Resolutions
It's time to review last year's resolutions and make a few for the new year. Last year first, okay? There were seven of them.
1. No more Holidailies.
Okay, so that one didn't work. I signed up again. In fact, I was the first to sign up! And, as we all know, I didn't do them daily. However, this is my eleventh, and I wrote more entries last month than I wrote all year. So not so bad. Grade: C
2. Use the damn gym membership. I did really well with this one until the miscarriage. I was going three times a week and everything. Then I didn't go from April til November. That was a good use of our money, huh? I went a little in December. Not very often. Grade: D
3. No more Julie the Cruise Director. Really. Really. No more endless organization of plans with friends who never do the organizing themselves; friends who are happy to see you when you make the plan, execute the plan (thank you, Riley) but never seem interested in doing either themselves. No more endless phone calls to people who never return your calls, let alone initiate the calls. No more. No more.
I did really, really well with this one. I do not feel like I Julied my way through the year at all. Sometimes I was Julie and sometimes other people were Julie. I called and was called. I invited and was invited. And the two people who inspired this resolution this year are both out of my life now. I successfully prioritized the people who prioritize me. Mutual contact: it's a beautiful thing. Grade: A
4. Keep saying no (and this includes to the drama). I directed Footloose this summer, and I took one class per semester. I quit my job at the end of the summer. I think I had the least overscheduled year of my life. I stuck to my guns and did not agree to direct the alumni show and I didn't do any other theatre. As a result of all the naysaying, I was able to volunteer for some stuff and not feel resentful about it. I gave as much time as I wanted to the Kerry campaign and not a minute more. I believe I rocked this resolution. Grade: A+
5. Organize the damn office already, would you? Er...heh. Grade: F.
6. Write something, anything, that doesn't have anything to do with the internet. Do papers count? No? How about birthday cards? Grade: F
7. Keep getting As. (Way to go on that Jane Austen paper, by the way - nothing like blazing new trails during your second graduate level course.) Grade last semester: A-. Grade this semester: unknown.
Okay, so I didn't do so badly. I did well with two resolutions designed to make me saner. Really, really well, in fact. I also did okay on a couple. And then I totally tanked on some others. This seems perfectly normal.
This year's resolutions are not quite so extensive - and I guess they're not all resolutions. One or two are wishes. We'll keep them short and sweet this time, shall we?
1. Exercise. Eat better.
I've already taken one step toward this - I've signed up for an entire year of once-weekly personal training sessions. I was eating pretty well in November and December until the holidays hit, so I feel pretty confident about that part. I'm also now a part of a great weight-loss blog, Pare Up/Pare Down. The wonderful women over there are inspiring, and being a part of their community is a great thing.
2. Be good to the people who saved my life this year.
This one won't be hard.
3. Organize the damn office.
It's already on the January to-do list.
4. Write something with my brother, and something with Elizabeth.
Both of these are at least in the thinking stages.
5. Get political activism site up and running.
This is already in the works.
The wish list is very short, and very heartfelt. It goes a little something like this:
1. baby
2. good job for brother
3. peace and love for dear friends
4. continued health for my family, especially my grandmother
5. peace and sanity in our world
Please, 2005. We'll be good. Be good to us?
