5 December 2004: Leaves of Change

Tell me how anyone is supposed to look out the window at this and feel depressed?

This is the way the Japanese maple in our front yard looks in the fall. This picture was actually taken last year, but it looks the same every fall. This is the way it looked last month.

Look at that glorious riot of color. I mean, just look at it. A picture doesn't do it justice. Standing underneath it is like standing under fire. When the sun shines right through the leaves, right over you, it's easy to believe that everything is going to be okay. Or at least that everything will get better. Someday.

I spent a lot of time looking at this tree last month. If the leaves can change, surely other things can as well. That feeling stayed with me long after the tree shed its glory all over our front yard; long after every last leaf had blown away.
